"Our house is our corner of the world. It is the human beings first cosmos." Bachelard
"Over my five decades I have lived in twelve houses across diverse continents and in six countries. Packing boxes led my family in and out of various houses; our furniture and photographs creating familiar spaces in each new home we inhabited. ‘Home’ meant the life contained within the walls and the memories we created in each dwelling. This body of work investigates the challenging area of representing ephemeral memories attached to ideas of home. Each image is an interpretation of places and times past-something palpable yet never quite fully remembered. With so much attached to memory, visions of the past remain just below the surface of conscious recollection. Memories Are a House quietly acknowledges a poignant realization that the season for cultivating and nurturing your family passes all too quickly. Seated within that melancholic space, the series is a lamentation for the passage of time, illuminated by a nostalgic awareness that the past is a place we cannot inhabit again. The works comprise of repurposed gauze curtains stretched on a series of various sized frames. Curtains are handled daily in domestic life, acting as a type of protective shield between our inner home and the world outside the window. Gauze is fragile, delicate and easily torn-both a literal and metaphorical representation of the translucent nature of recollection. The actual process of painting on gauze seeks to parallel the process of memory storage and retrieval".
